چکیده
SUMMARY The aim of this study was to measure lingual volume and to correlate it with and predict it from the area of the radiographic shadow of the tongue as well as with demographic and biometric characteristics. In 70 healthy subjects (35 males and 35 females) aged between 20 and 37 years, tongue volume was determined using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Volumes were correlated with the area of the tongue on the sagittal plane determined from the lingual shadow on profile cephalometric radiographs. Demographic and biometric characteristics were also available for each subject. The mean lingual volume was 79.5 +/- 14.2 cm(3) and was gender dependent. The mean lingual volume was 89.9 +/- 11.5 and 68.9 +/- 7.0 cm(3) in males and females, respectively. Correlations between tongue volume and body height, weight, and the body mass index (BMI) were highly significant. A strong correlation (r = 0.83, P < 0.001) was found between lingual volume measured using MRI and the radiographically determined area of the lingual shadow. The associated regression line allowed the area of the lingual shadow to be used to estimate the corresponding tongue volume in individual subjects. Multiple regression analysis showed that lingual volume was best predicted by the lingual shadow, gender, age, and BMI (R(2) = 0.80).

Traditional cephalometrics (1-3), though having the limitation of any two-dimensional (2D) method, has several advantages, including low cost, easy access and reduced invasiveness. Although computerized tomography (CT) has many advantages as a measuring tool for three-dimensional (3D) airway size (4-8), it is time consuming and expensive for· routine clinical use. However, 3D color reconstructi...

Introdouction: The aim of this study was to compare information regarding pharyngeal airway sizes in adolescent subjects with different malocclusion classes obtained from lateral cephalograms and 3–dimensional (3D) cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. Materials and methods: In this prospective cross-sectional study, CBCT scans and lateral cephalograms of 35 subjects, taken with...
متن کاملChange in Tongue Morphology in Response to Expiratory Resistance Loading Investigated by Magnetic Resonance Imaging
[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of expiratory resistance load on the tongue area encompassing the suprahyoid and genioglossus muscles. [Subjects] The subjects were 30 healthy individuals (15 males, 15 females, mean age: 28.9 years). [Methods] Magnetic resonance imaging was used to investigate morphological changes in response to resistive expiratory pressure lo...
متن کاملComparison of tongue volume/oral cavity volume ratio between obstructive sleep apnea syndrome patients and normal adults using magnetic resonance imaging.
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a group of disorders in which breathing stops intermittently and repeatedly for 10 seconds or more during sleep. The causal site of the disorders is thought to be in the upper airway above the glottis. In order to understand the three-dimensional features of the oral and peripharyngeal structures involved in the disorders, we calculated the tongue volu...

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a widely used technology for non-invasive tongue imaging. MRI can detail tongue and muscle shapes and their variability in both healthy and diseased populations. Such detail can aid significantly in the interpretation of muscle interactions in the tongue for both normal and disordered speech production. However, the size or shape of the tongue and muscles may...
